Meer kapotte ramen

Het kapotte raam van Bastiat is in onze kolommen al eens langsgekomen (hier en hier bijvoorbeeld). Het idee van deze 19e eeuwse Franse econoom: meer nationaal inkomen betekent niet noodzakelijk meer welvaart, want als dat het geval zou zijn dan zou het ingooien van ramen ook leiden tot meer welvaart, terwijl dat evident niet het geval is.

Hilarisch: een ramenzetter in Californie neemt de parabel wel erg letterlijk. Nu vanwege de kredietcrisis de zaken een stuk minder gaan, ging hij op eigen houtje ramen in de buurt ingooien:

Police spokesman Carl Baker […] said Klenke, who was arrested Monday, had planned to contact the victims later and offer to repair the windows for a fee. "I’m sure it has something to do with the economy," Baker said. "Everybody is hurting now."

Kaarsen vlak voor kerst fors duurder

zo kopt de Telegraaf een paar dagen gelden.

Kaarsen en theelichtjes worden vanaf maandag peperduur. De prijzen aan de vooravond van de kerstdagen en jaarwisseling gaan met 30 tot soms 65 procent omhoog vanwege de invoering van de Europese importheffing. De verhoging, opgelegd door de Europese Commissie, is het gevolg van de antidumpmaatregelen om de Europese kaarsenfabrikanten tegen spotgoedkope aanbieders uit China te beschermen.

Excuses, maar de verleiding is veel te groot om opnieuw naar deze klassieker van Bastiat te linken (nu in Nederlandse vertaling!). Zie eerder hier.

Kaarsenmakers

In 1845 schreef Frédéric Bastiat een satire waarin hij de Franse kaarsenmakers liet oproepen tot protectionistische maatregelen wegens de komst van een agressieve en oneerlijke buitenlandse concurrent. Thijs verwees er al eens naar:

We are suffering from the ruinous competition of a rival who apparently works under conditions so far superior to our own for the production of light that he is flooding the domestic market with it at an incredibly low price; for the moment he appears, our sales cease, all the consumers turn to him, and a branch of French industry whose ramifications are innumerable is all at once reduced to complete stagnation. This rival, which is none other than the sun, is waging war on us [...]

Ultieme ironie. In 2008 roepen de Europese kaarsenmakers op tot protectionistische maatregelen wegens de komst van een agressieve en oneerlijke buitenlandse concurrent:

European candlemakers [...] recently filed an anti-dumping complaint with the European Commission targeting booming Chinese imports. The European Candle Institute, [...] said imports of Chinese-made candles had nearly doubled from 2002 to 2006 while prices had tumbled, eating into European manufacturers’ profit margins. “The massive underselling from China cannot be explained with economic advantages, particularly on account of lower wages,” the association said in a statement. [...] “This competition is only possible on account of unfair and therefore non-legal methods.”
